Updates On Our Weekends Away

Socials have always been at the heart of the Sheffield 40's with our Weekends away ever popular. So far this year we’ve been up in the Howgill Fells, back down to Snowdonia and enjoyed another brilliant weekend at the Dent Beer and Music Festival.

A fabulous August Bank Holiday at Clun Shropshire is our next port of call in just a few weeks’ time.

Last year we received requests to have a weekend closer to home in the Peak District. We booked for a weekend at Alstonfield Youth Hostel. Disappointingly, the take up was not as high as anticipated so the committee have decided to now withdraw this weekend from the calendar.

On a more positive note, also suggested were weekends with a more comfortable type of accommodation. We’ve gone ahead with this and booked Stanley House in Eskdale. (See Social pages for details). Most of the rooms were booked on the first day! There are still a few places left though so get texting.

Ramblins...28 March 2014

Hi Hope everyone is enjoying the mild weather.

We had lots of fun in Sedbergh and on the Howgills. Thanks to everyone for all the organising at the weekend away.

If anyone is interested in being the weekend away coordinator please email the Group site.

For the weekend in Llanberis we only have walk availability for the people who are booked at the ‘Chamois Centre’, smaller groups are required in case the weather is not good to ensure the safety of all our members. There are still two places left for anyone who would like to join us.

The Dent weekend is Friday 27th and Saturday 28th June, 2014, back by popular demand!

Jude is organising an August Bank holiday weekend away to Shropshire near Clun, Friday 22nd to Monday 25th August, three nights in total. Camping, hostel and B&B’s available to book.

So put these dates in your diaries, details will be on the Website soon.

Photos - Please send in your photos in a folder to make it easier to upload, a selection will be used.

In Case of Emergency - A member of our Group has suggested we all put an ICE (in case of emergency) number in our mobile phone. We feel this is a great idea.

Ramblins...23 November 2013

Just a quick update.

Hope everybody is enjoying their walking. The new Committee's getting into their stride and we look forward to meeting you all on the forthcoming social events.

If you are coming to the Disco please book this week as I have to order the buffet.

Unfortunately, Ian Steer (Photo's and Flickr) has had to resign. If anyone feels they have the skills and would like to fill the Photo's and Flickr post please email me on the group website.

Thank you everybody for all your support especially in making everyone so welcome.

Sandra Knaggs

Chairperson

Ramblins...27 September 2013

Hi all,

An early last Ramblins from the committee as an era of 6 years comes to a close for two founder members, Keef and myself. It is amazing to think that we started it all off with Pete and Sue all those years ago and now we have grown to over 200 members. Over the last 6 years we have seen so many happy faces, new friendships, engagements etc and it is thanks to all you members for making it such a welcoming walking group. Lynn also leaves the committee after at least 4 years being treasurer. Clare has done a brilliant job of developing the website over the last 3 years and now looks forward to an easier life away from editing it. Jude moves on too after a year with us but she will be there to help out the new committee. Keef, of course, leaves the walks programme role and we are all set to move on to a nomadic period! Phew lucky Sara who stays on the committee to help the group. Massive thanks go to the committee for all their hard work which leads me straight onto the AGM this Sunday. Everyone is welcome to attend and there will be nibbles to munch on. There is the regular Rising Sun pub quiz afterwards at 9:30 if anyone fancies staying for that.

AGM Sunday 29th September 2013 at The Rising Sun, Fulwood, Sheffield 7.00 - 9.00 pm

Agenda

  • Minutes from AGM 2012
  • Matters arising from minutes
  • Annual report - chair
  • Issues raised by members-
  • i) location of resources and how members can borrow items
  • ii) finances and when accounts will be on the website
  • iii) questions for the new committee - their vision and building on initiatives already started, including the use of IT.
  • Reports from committee members - membership secretary, treasurer, weekends away co-ordinator, walks co-ordinator and website editor.
  • Motions if any submitted
  • AOB
  • Election of a new committee
  • Set a date for new committee meeting

Well that's it folks.

The show must go on but we will be away from the walking group action until next February.

So wishing you all happy Ramblins.

With a tear in my eye I sign off.

Carol and the committee

Ramblins...02 September 2013

Hi everyone

Hope you have all had a fantastic summer and enjoyed the walking. A quick nudge about offering to lead walks. Please email the group if you could lead a walk for us, short or long, Saturday or Sunday, with a friend or alone, we are grateful for your help.

The big business in this Ramblins... is the AGM on Sunday 29th September at The Rising Sun pub (function room), Fulwood Road, S10 3QA at 7pm prompt until 8.30-9pm to which you are all warmly invited. We realise that it is a little earlier than usual but Keef and I are off travelling from 1st October and the accounts have to be closed on 30th September. The meeting will have reports from committee members including the annual report from the Chairperson, the financial position of the group and a slot of time for questions from members. If you have any particular concerns, suggestions or questions that you feel should be discussed at the AGM please submit your thoughts to the committee via email by 20th September please. Similarly if any members wish to put forward any motions please contact the committee by 20th September. You must have a seconder for any motion to be considered and their name must also be submitted. A motion is a formal proposal by a member that the committee have to discuss and act on eg I move that the committee look at putting some walks using public transport every month.

Several members have put their names forward for positions, a big cheer for them, and they are listed below. We have only one name for each position (with the exception of a job share) so a vote doesn't have to take place. Voting only takes place if more than one person wishes to take on the same role. At the AGM, after the reports from the committee, the new committee will be appointed who will then arrange a meeting to consider any motions, actions, suggestions etc that arise from the meeting.

Nominations:

  • Chairperson - Sandra Knaggs
  • Treasurer - Jill Brogden
  • Membership Secretary - Sara Collins
  • Website editor - Peter Robinson
  • Walks co-ordinators - Jean Billingham and Sue Killeen
  • Social Secretary - Maria Hardy
  • Facebook and photos editor - Ian Steer
  • Weekends away co-ordinator - vacancy but several people have offered to organise a weekend

Socials

If you haven't already booked on the social on Friday 27th September just text me and pay on the night. Lots of us will be there especially the exiting committee, so come along and share some of the highlights of the last 6 years of our reign! Bring out your old photos (of the walks of course) and share them with us all, we will have a wall to stick them on and bring any anecdotes to make us laugh.

The website has details of new socials that have been planned particularly pub night Friday 6th September and Christmas party disco on Friday 20th December. Full details of Christmas events will be posted up soon on the website when final details have been confirmed.

That's all for now folks.

Hope to see you at the social

Carol and the Committee

Ramblins...04 August 2013

Hi everyone

Hope you are all enjoying the summer and dodging the summer rain but overall a fab summer so far. Lots of us have noticed the lush, overgrown paths with a profusion of stinking nettles and indeed many of us have had fizzy legs after being attacked by them!

A bit of business to tell you this month so I better get started!

It is that time of year when we have to start thinking about the AGM (29/9/13) and the formation of a new committee. The posts to be filled are: Chairperson, Secretary (Sara will stand again), Treasurer, Social Secretaries (2 posts), Walks coordinator, Weekends Away coordinator and Website editor. Several people have already offered their services but if anyone else feels they could take on any of the roles please email the group by Friday 23rd August. If more than one person applies for the same position then a vote will take place at the AGM. I will let you know in the next Ramblins who has applied for each position.

Now down to the social side of things and dates to put in your diary.
Friday 6th September pub meet - The Red Deer
Big social gathering on Friday 27th September buffet and dancing at Nether Edge Bowling Club £3 on the door but text Carol or email the group so we know how many to cater for.
Friday 4th October Mexican meal at Amigos on London Road
Friday 6th December Christmas meal at The Broadfield
Next Year - return weekend away to Llanberis - Chamois Mountaineering House 6/7/8th June
All details of the above are on the website or will be going on the website soon with booking arrangements.

That's all for now folks.

See you on the hills

Ramblins...09 July 2013

Hi everyone

No complaining that the weather is too hot for walking!! Make the most of it after the strange weather of the last 2 weeks where the midsummer walk was rained off but then Dent camping weekend was dry and now the glorious sun. Keep checking our website for new walks.

Socials

A quick reminder that the pub meet is this Friday 12th July at The Red Deer 8ish. Friday September 27th at Nether Edge Bowling Club full details on the website. This is a biggie because after 6 years of conception, birth then feeding, nurturing, socialising and encouraging you lot, oh and of course organising the walking. Keef and I are stepping down from the committee at the next AGM in October to go travelling for a while. This is an early advertisement for someone to take up Chairperson and walk coordinator roles. Good, I can hear you now all reaching for the computer keyboard to volunteer! Your group needs you. If you want to know anything about the roles please drop us an email and one of us will get back to you. Info about the AGM and other vacancies will be in August Ramblins...

Lynn is also stepping down as treasurer after lots of years with us and she has done a fab job but we need someone to take on the role as no treasurer no group! Ramblers HQ rule number one ....and a half! Seriously though folks please think about volunteering even as a job share!

Finally for this July month's Ramblins.. well done to Mandy and Ian for their winning competition photos. They have made lots of us smile so keep them coming in, the smiles I mean!

As always, a massive thank you to walk leaders for offering walks and a plea for any new walk leaders to step forward and offer to lead a walk in the next programme.

Well, I'm off for a walk now.

So, see you on the hills soon.

TTFN,

Carol and the Committee

Easter Ramblins...27 Mar 2013

Hi everyone

I hope the snow finally disappears this weekend so that the Easter bunny can deliver eggs to you all! It was unbelievable last weekend in Derbyshire with both the Grindleford to Fox House road and the Calver to Fox House road closed and they didn't reopen until Tuesday! The snow drifts were well over 2 metres (6 foot James!) high and Grindleford woods looked like a fairy tale land like Narnia.

A bumper Easter Ramblins with lots of new exciting things happening. Clare has worked her magic wand over the galleries page so take a look at the photos. Talking about photos - we have decided to have a photo competition for SWG40s members with gift vouchers as prizes. There are two categories - beautiful landscape photo and funny group photo so get snapping or dig out some old ones. Full details are on the website with the closing date for entries on 1st June.
