Route: The Grouse Inn, White Edge Moor (short ascent), Barbrook Bridge, follow Bar Brook (mainly flat), Barbrook pond for ‘coffee’.
Head for the A621, cross and up a short ascent to Ramsley Lodge, down to Ramsley Reservoir and onto Fox Lane for a short distance, meet the A621 again and cross onto Big Moor. Head down to small pond, cross the A621 (again… .. . won’t be the last time today) short ascent to the top of the rocks/edge, Gardom’s Edge, into the wood (Old Stone) Head towards Birchen Edge (Three Ships, Nelson’s Monument, Trig and lunch) Head for the A621 and cross to head for Baslow Edge (Wellington’s Monument) mainly flat. Baslow Edge, Curbar Car Park (short stop??) Head down the road to Warren Lodge, walk under Curbar Edge, short ascent onto Froggatt Edge to the end and cross the A625 down to the stream and back to the Grouse through Hay Wood.. .. Fin

This area quickly becomes full, there is a National Trust car park a few hundred metres up the road.

Route: Starting on the Derwent Valley Heritage way heading over to Wirksworth and past the Star Disk. Onto Middleton top and by the quarry before arriving back in Cromford. If you are collecting Peaky wonders there are a few collect on this walk. There’s a couple of decent climbs on this walk but downhill on the last leg.

Route: The first few miles is easy going. We head into Chatsworth Park and follow the DVH Way to Edensor. An easy ascent up to Calton Houses and down into Calton Lees. Them pick up the DVH Way again into Rowsley.
We then follow the river for a short distance and cross the road at Smeltingmill Brook and head for Beeley where we cross the road again and track back into the grounds of Chatsworth and head for the House. Next is a steep ascent up to the Hunting Lodge and head back to Baslow.

Route: This walk goes from Totley up hill and down dale to the pretty Millthorpe Valley to see Edward Carpenter’s house, where he grew crops, made sandals, wrote, entertained and networked with authors, politicians, activists, and lived as a couple with his lover, George Merrill, for nigh on 25yrs.
The return route goes past the grave of George Hukin, Carpenter’s true love, at Holmesfield, and past St George’s Farm, Totley. Carpenter had been asked by the owner of the farm, John Ruskin, if he would keep an eye on his tenants, the “Sheffield communists”.
The theme is free love and socialism!

Route: We take the Sheffield to Bolton train (dep SHF 10.15 arr BTD 10.46) then walk through pastoral Barnsley to cross the Dearne to Darfield where we can have a guided tour of the Maurice Dobson Museum (it’s 4 rooms in a house) from one of the volunteers. There’s a cafe and a courtyard (where we we can eat our snap) In the afternoon we walk along the Dearne and along the TPT past the bird sanctuary at Old Moor (another cafe opportunity) and to Goldthorpe station. I’ll be taking a final refresher in the Sheffield Tap.
It's nigh on 13 km and flattish: proper excursion and day out. Return on trains, probs 4.30pm or the next one at 5.30pm

Route: Walking on some less trodden paths we walk up three Ethels. First its Revidge trig with its dragon cairn and great views, onto Warslow and up to Ecton hill before heading up to Wetton Hill. Some good grassy paths but muddy/boggy in places if wet. Last mile on tarmac.

Route: We start by catching a 53 bus (at 9.50am!) to Bolsover. An hour later we’ll disembark at Bolsover and walk down the hill into the valley to the model village and the site of the colliery. Then we can leg it back up the hill past the castle and strike out across the fields, via the mediaeval village of Elmton, to enter Cresswell through the model village which is by the site of the colliery. We’ll walk on to Cresswell station and catch a train to Worksop, take some refreshment in The Mallard (the station tap) if we have time, then catch a train back to Sheffield for some final refreshment at the Sheffield Tap. Proper day out.
Bus fare, £2. Buy an off-peak single from Cresswell to Sheffield.

Notes: The 2 collieries opened in the 1890s and the owners provided high class housing for miners & their families, with: running water; gas lighting; social & sports clubs; allotments; health care; a decent shop; schools; and plenty of green space. Both villages have been refurbed and are a mix of social and private housing. Bolsover was already an established town but Cresswell rapidly grew from a rural hamlet into a bustling industrial town with a busy railway station and branches. DH Lawrence used his knowledge of the model villages in a (thinly) disguised description of a car journey that Constance Chatterley takes to Sheffield in Lady Chatterley’s Lover.
Both mines, and the younger ones, in the N Notts coalfield closed in the 1990s
